t1

don’t touch your face!

This is by far the most important tip! Touching or rubbing the face clogs pores and causes acne breakouts. Just don’t do it!

t2

don’t touch your face!

If you use makeup, make sure not to touch or rub once it is applied so it doesn’t get pushed into the pore openings.

t3

don’t touch your face!

Consider having a family member or friend help remind you when you touch your face, as this tends to be an unconscious habit.

t4

Wash your face

Wash your face at least once daily to help remove pore obstructions, especially if you wear makeup.

t5

Avoid thick products

Avoid application of thicker products such as moisturizing creams or ointments on acne prone areas. If needed, use lotions that are less pore clogging.

t6

Don’t trust all skin care products

Don’t blindly trust all skin care products. Many claim to be “noncomedogenic” which means a product won’t cause acne. Unfortunately this claim has no FDA regulations, official definitions or tests, so products can use this on their label without meeting any requirements. So even acne creams that claim to be noncomedogenic may be causing acne at the same time they are treating acne.

t7

Liquid, gel or spray sunscreens

If you use sunscreen, try to choose a liquid, gel or spray, which are less likely to clog your pores than greasy or creamy products

t8

Avoid tight clothing

Avoid tight fitting, non-cotton shirts. If your shirt becomes damp or sweaty, change into a dry shirt. Some athletic shirts in particular tend to trap sweat on your skin and keep it from evaporating, so it should not be used.

t9

Don’t “pop” acne pimples

Don’t try to “pop” deep acne pimples. You will likely cause them to rupture under the skin. This causes inflammation, which can lead to scarring.

t10

use cotton washcloth

If your face gets shiny/oily such that it bothers you and washing your face is not an option, an ideal choice is to rub gently with a cotton baby washcloth, which is small, soft and easily concealed. Even the sleeve of a shirt would be OK compared to using a hand or arm.
